Benchmarking

Google Analytics added a new feature that lets you compare your site's traffic with average data for other similar sites. To make this feature possible, you need to enable data sharing with the benchmarking service. "Google will remove all identifiable information about your website, then combine that data with hundreds of other anonymous sites in comparable industries and report them in an aggregate form." There's also an option to enable data sharing with other Google services that will allow a better integration between Analytics, AdWords and other services.

You can decide if you want to share your Google Analytics data with Google, and also have full control over how you share it with us. Visit the Edit Account and Data Sharing Settings page from within your account to opt in to sharing your data "With Google products only" or "Anonymously with Google products and the benchmarking service."

SEO Breadcrumbs

What is SEO Breadcrumbs ?

Breadcrumbs give a visual indication where a visitor is a site.
They are useful for providing context on portals with a deep hierarchy.
They allow you to easily visit a higher point in the structure.

Breadcrumbs for SEO

One of the important aspects of site optimization is creating abundant, keyword-rich links between pages of the website. Breadcrumbs are a great mechanism for creating these links. The larger the site, more numerous these cross-links become. The “deeper” the page on a hierarchical site, the more links it will have to other pages.

Breadcrumbs have some qualities that make them the idealcross-linking tool:

    * Every page links to the home page and parent pages.
    * The number of links to “higher level” pages grow with the total size of the site.
    * Breadcrumbs result in more links to important pages — those that have more subordinate pages.
    * Useful breadcrumbs typically use keywords, thus the links are automatically keyword-rich.
    * They can usually be created programmatically / semi-automatically on sites with CMS’s or stores.

What are breadcrumb links?

Breadcrumb links, also known as contextual links, are a type of navigation aid for Web pages. They provide a textual representation of a site's structure, usually a vertical hierarchy of a site. For example, on ecommerce sites, breadcrumb links often have the following format:

Home > Category > Subcategory > Product

On a larger site, the breadcrumb format might be the following:

Home > Channel Page > Category > Subcategory > Product

On a smaller site, breadcrumb links might have a very simple format:

Home > Category > Product

And if a site does not contain many pages, breadcrumb links might not be necessary at all. Some breadcrumb links are locational, as the ones I described above, or dynamic (path). A path breadcrumb trail communicates to users the path they used to find a Web page on a site.

Bread Crumbs Navigation for SEO

For effective search engine optimization of web sites and usefulness of a website one must do the following with regards to breadcrumbs:

  • Incorporate breadcrumbs into online catalogs
  • Checkout catalogs
  • Have keyword-rich anchor text
  • Limit the number of crumbs to 6 or fewer
  • Avoid use of abbreviations
  • Capitalize the first letter of each word
  • Use full title when it is short
  • Titles must be short
  • Do not follow a spider's path for the breadcrumb.

Twitter restricted in some countries

Twitter announced that it would begin restricting tweets in certain countries, marking a policy shift for the social media platform that helped propel the popular uprisings recently sweeping across the Middle East.

Twitter wrote in a blog post, "As we continue to grow internationally, we will enter countries that have different ideas about the contours of freedom of expression".

It said even with the possibility of such restrictions, Twitter would not be able to coexist with some countries. "Some differ so much from our ideas that we will not be able to exist there," it said.

Twitter gave as examples of restrictions it might cooperate with "certain types of content, such as France or Germany, which ban pro-Nazi content."

A Twitter spokeswoman declined to elaborate on the blog. "Starting today, we give ourselves the ability to reactively withhold content from users in a specific country while keeping it available in the rest of the world," the Twitter blog said.

Last year, Twitter General Counsel Alex Macgillivray declared that the company was "from the free speech wing of the free speech party."

In the interest of transparency, Twitter said, it has built a mechanism to inform users in the event that a Tweet is being blocked.

Twitter's move comes at a time when internet companies such as Google and Facebook have wrestled with foreign governments over freedom of speech and privacy issues as they expand rapidly overseas.

Initial public offering

Facebook Would Like to Launch IPO in May

Facebook could be planning to launch its initial public offering (IPO) this May, according to a report from All Things Digital. The social network is looking to go public in late spring – likely during the third week of May, according to unnamed sources.

It has long been known that Facebook was planning an IPO. In November, the company was said to have been targeting the second quarter of 2012 for its stock offering.

An IPO from Facebook would be the largest from a technology company in recent years, with recent valuations of the company reaching as high as $100 billion.

Rob Enderle, founder and principal analyst for the Enderle Group, told V3 that a Facebook IPO would also help to shape the future of the industry, as many company's will base their own IPO decisions on the outcome of a Facebook offering.

"This will be a huge bellwether. If it goes well, it will likely result in a wave of IPOs and could, in and of itself, signal a major market recovery," Enderle said. "If it fails, the opposite would also be true."

Facebook's anticipated IPO comes in the wake of a number of public offerings from web firms. Last year, social networking site LinkedIn saw its share price double within minutes of trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

Music streaming service Pandora Media's IPO also proved popular, though economic worries later caused the company's stock price to cool.

Social Media Marketing in 2012 – Are You Prepared?

The regular Dos, the onetime Dos and Don’ts

Social Media Marketing Usage Statistics
As you see, majority of businesses agree with the fact that social media marketing is important for their business promotion. Obviously 93% of the businesses out there are involved into social media marking in some form. With these statistics, it is clear that you landed on this news post because you are one among the 93% of businesses using social media for promotion.

Social media marketing this year had expanded a lot beyond the “feisty 3” – Face book, twitter and linked in. However, we feel linked in falling out of internet marketing lead, focusing more to business networking. The gap is filled by the new comer Google +. Though the social media sites and networks have grown all over like mushrooms, none of them were able to make a mark as the top 3 sites did.

Regular Dos

Social media is not all about twitter, face book and Google plus. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to enter deep into each and every social media site which is available today. Identifying your possible social media interaction lets you decide which social networks are to be added to your regular social media promotion list.

For example, being an SEO company, we cannot add flickr to our regular social media marketing list though we can manage to put together pictorial representation of our services. Those images don’t go viral through any of the image sharing social networks. Our regular social media marketing efforts should be on social media sites where we can share informative content such as blogs, status updates, social groups etc.

For Regular Social Media Marketing, include:
Face book Wall Updates + Tweets + Google Plus Stream posts (Make sure you are posting unique information across these 3 sites).
Don’t just stop there. Identify the social media stuff that you can generate and pick top 10 other targeted social media spots. For example, if you are promoting a travel website, you should be adding social video sharing sites and social photo site.

One Time Do’s:

As already said, social media is not just carrying countable number of sites today. Based on our research at SIM labs, there are about 600 social media sites where you need to have your business presence. This is not mainly for social media marketing, but to secure your brand identity in these social media spots. There are several third party social media name check services available to know the open spots for your brand.  Consider this activity as brand reputation management; this is a onetime process. Create fully completed profiles in the social media sites and forget them.
Never Do’s in social media marketing

Don’t get into all the social media sites and social networks just because everyone else does. As said earlier, identify your target social audience and pick the spots to promote. Another main thing not to do with social media marketing is; not to promote your brand every time. Remember that social media marketing is entirely different from SEO or any other conventional internet marketing. You cannot just drop links on each and every post or action you make within the social media sites. You will have to really dedicate your time to present the audience with something really useful to them (which includes interesting information without any motive of promotion in it).

So here is the checklist for social media marketing

  • Identify the top 20 social networks suitable for niche where the target audience is present. Add them to the regular maintenance list along with face book, twitter and Google Plus.
  • Secure your brand identity, user names and vanity url's with all the 600 bets social media sites. Create fully completed profiles even if it takes time because this time invest me is just one time
  • As you will have only around 25 social media sites to maintain if the ideas in this article are followed, allocate at least 2 hours a day for social media marketing. Post information; get involved with the fan network by commenting to their posts and encouraging them.
