Bing Launches Webmaster Guidelines, Offers SEO Webinars

Bing webmaster guidelines are live and tucked away in the Content Guidelines section of Webmaster Help & How-to. The guidelines are designed to “help most business owners understand the broad strokes of search marketing” and will not contain deep, exhaustive answers, according to a blog post by Bing Webmaster Program senior product manager Duane Forrester.

This is Bing’s first crack at a set of official guidelines around most major topics affecting webmasters looking to optimize their sites for Bing. The broad categories covered in their guidelines are:

    Content
    Links
    Social
    Indexation
    Technical
    SEO
    Avoid

Bing specifically calls out five “don’ts” that should surprise no one in their Avoid section:

    Cloaking
    Link schemes
    Like schemes
    Meta refresh redirects
    Duplicate content

They give SEO the thumbs up, stating, “Search engine optimization is a valid practice which seeks to improve a website, making content easier to find and more relevant.” According to Bing, the main areas of focus when optimizing a website for their engine are:

Title, meta description, image alt, and H1 tags

Links - internal and external

Social sharing

Crawlability, including XML sitemaps, navigational structure, rich media cautions, graceful degradation, URL structure, robots.txt, crawl rate, access and instruction for Bingbot to crawl the site, and using Ignore URL parameters, where appropriate.

Site structure, including links, URL structure and keyword usage, clean URLs, HTML and XML sitemaps, content hierarchy, and global navigation.

On-page considerations including head copy, body copy, anchor text, content and links.

Internet Yellow Pages (IYP)

The IYP hold value for a local business. People may not go directly to the Internet Yellow Pages to look for a business, but an IYP listing can come up in a Google search, especially for long tail keywords. Searchers that are deciding between one business and another will look for as much information as possible. An IYP listing is one additional piece of online real estate that you can get noticed by. The listing includes the most important information for business.

An internet yellow page (IYP) listing also helps for SEO link building purposes because it is an established and trusted site. Local links may not be as important for a large national corporation, but for a small local business they are necessary to get. Listings in local directories, like the Internet Yellow Pages, tell the search engines (and searchers) where you are located and establish the relevance of your business in relation to geographical areas. For a small business that has a new website or just launched a website, it’s important to obtain links from these directories during the first phase of link building.

Additionally, internet yellow pages are a great place for companies targeting a local audience to get great coverage. For instance, if a business has multiple offices or locations, why not simply list them in the major internet yellow pages (and even local search engine places) such as: YellowPages.com, Superpages, Local.com, Yelp, Merchant Circle, Yellow Book, Whitepages, Mapquest, 411.com, etc. If you are questioning if these internet yellow pages should be part of your SEO program, then start with the big ones first (Google Places, Yahoo! Local, Bing Local) and then branch out to these niche and smaller internet yellow pages.

Another key point to remember about the internet yellow pages is that in many cases they are so aged that  profile(s) will rank in the search engines on their own for various long tail keywords. That said, it is very important to naturally incorporate your major relevant local keyword within the description and fill our each listing completely and include: description, hours, payments accepted, accurate categories, photos, videos, logo, etc. This will help ensure your listing at a particular internet yellow page website stands out and is positioned well within the category.

SEO - Quiz 4

1. Page A has two links: one to page B and the other to page C. Does that mean both page B and page C have exactly the same amount of link juice? (select one answer)

   1. Yes
   2. Not necessarily

Explanation: Link juice a page has is divided evenly between all its links. This means both page B and page C get the same amount of link juice from page A.

However, page B and page C may have inbound links from other sites too, so the final amounts of link juice they have may differ.

2. Which statement is true? (You can select several answers)

   1. Filling Meta Description with your target keywords helps your website to rank better
   2. The maximum length of the TITLE tag contents that search engines can display is 65 symbols
   3. IMG ALT tag helps your website to rank better in the image search

   4. The H1 tag provides the same weight to keywords enclosed in it as the TITLE tag

Explanation: Meta Description doesn't influence the rank of a website directly. The H1 is far less important than the TITLE tag.

The TITLE tag length is not limited by any particular value (search engines will read any), but if you want the entire contents of a title to be displayed in SERPs you better stay within 65 symbols including spaces. IMG ALT is extremely important in the image search, because it is the major ranking factor alongside with the filename of a picture.

3. How would you define the importance of W3C validation for SEO? (select the most appropriate answer)

   1. Useless
   2. Somewhat useful
   3. Extremely important

Explanation: W3C is extremely important, because it standardizes the Web, makes it clearer and more stable, provides the rules for different browsers on how they should interpret and display a certain HTML code. However, in terms of SEO W3C validation is useless and doesn’t have any influence on rankings.

4 Awesome Link Building Strategies

One of the best ways to attract inbound links to your site is to create topnotch and interesting content. It’s never a good idea to obtain as many links to your site while failing to create quality content. Search engines might construe this as a black hat SEO tactic on your part and penalize your site. On the other hand, contents alone cannot take you further up the pecking order when it comes to the search engine rankings. Therefore, instead of mindlessly waiting for inbound links to come your way, why not utilize these four great link-building strategies to beat your competition.

1.     Internal Linking

Internal linking works when readers are directed to the other pages of your website by clicking on the highlighted word or phrases on the current page. Through internal linking you are able to establish that your web page is relevant to a particular keyword. This will lead to better search engine rankings for your web pages. Sometimes, as readers go along reading one of your posts, they might come across a term unbeknownst to them. If you have written articles regarding those topics on different pages of your site, you can use hyperlinks to internally link them to those articles. They will like the fact that your site is well structured and user-friendly because of the ease of access to specific content. Internal linking provides traffic to your web pages while winning the hearts of your readers and converting them from mere visitors into loyal subscribers.

2.     Video Marketing

This is a good link building strategy because of the lower competition amongst video results in the search engine. The most popular video submission platform is YouTube. However, the link building potential of videos in YouTube is rather questionable. This is because these links are no-follow and the search engines cannot easily reach the links. Nonetheless, if you could post a video that goes viral, you will reap huge traffic and inbound links.

 3.     Local Linking

Laying out a strong foothold locally is not easy. But, the outcome is rewarding in terms of SEO benefits. You should take into account local resources in order to gain links for your site. One of your best options is to get a link from your local Chamber of Commerce. You can also go to the Better Business Bureau in your state and find a way to get a link. Links obtain from these two local agencies have authority and they are high quality links. Another option is to ask for links from the websites of your local libraries. You should also submit to local listings such as Yahoo local or Google Local Business Center. Lastly, you can try to collaborate with local bloggers to rack up additional links to your sites. Finally, you want to zero in on those bloggers with an established reputation in your community.

4.     Link Baiting

Link baiting is the strategy of obtaining links from others without revealing any hint of your intention to do so. Each of us has a strong consciousness of our own self-importance. You can capitalize on this by using ego bait linking. For instance, you can create a list of top bloggers for a certain niche. Bloggers included in the list will more than likely tell their blog readers about their acquired feat by posting your link in a blog post. These links will create traffic to your site from the large audiences of those bloggers. You just have to be creative with this strategy and you’re sure to attract inbound links.

Link building is never an easy task and requires a lot of hard work. You can employ the four strategies above to earn more links to your web site

5 Tactics to Increase Blog Traffic:

1.Target Your Content to an Audience Likely to Share:

For example, great infographics that strike a chord, beautiful videos that tell a story  and remarkable collections of facts that challenge common assumptions are all targeted at audiences likely to share (geeks with facial hair, those interested in weight loss and those with political thoughts about macroeconomics respectively).

2.Participate in the Communities Where Your Audience Already Gathers:

you probably already know a few blogs, forums, websites and social media communities where discussions and content are being posted on your topic (and if you don't a Google search will take you much of the way). From that list, you can do some easy expansion using a web-based tool like Double Click's Ad Planner

3.Make Your Blog's Content -Friendly:

SEO for blogs is both simple and easy to set up, particularly if you're using an SEO-friendly platform like Wordpress, Drupal or Joomla.

4.Use Twitter, Facebook and Google+ to Share Your Posts & Find New Connections:

If you haven't already, register a personal account and a brand account at each of the following - Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and LinkedIn (those links will take you directly to the registration pages for brand pages).

5. Install Analytics and Pay Attention to the Results:

Most bloggers install Google Analytics (which is free), and watch to see where visits originate, which sources drive quality traffic and what others might be saying about you and your content when they link over.

Tips for a Spider Friendly Site

What exactly is a spider? Electronic spiders, also known as bots or crawlers, are how the search engines find your site. These spiders are sent out on a mission to find information on the millions of websites that exist. They crawl through the Web making lists of words found on websites. These words are the key to people finding the information for which they search.

What the Spiders Like:
1. Robots.txt File – The first thing the spiders will do is look for a robots.txt file. This file will let them know which pages of your site they need not bother with. All sites should have this file even if it is blank because it is the first thing the spiders look for.
2. Head Section - Once the spiders find the robots.txt file, they will move onto the head section of your website. Here they will look at your title, meta tags, and keywords. Be sure your title includes descriptive keywords and is not too long.
3. Website Content – Next on the spiders journey is your website content. Be sure to add fresh content to your site regularly. Several times a week would help encourage the spiders to visit often. Within your content, you need to have the keywords that are listed in your head section.
4. Site Map - Having a site map on your site will enable the spiders to easily navigate through your site and index more of your pages. Your site map should contain only text links to all your pages.
5. Backlinks – Backlinks or inbound links are very important because they elevate the importance of your site in the eyes of the spiders. The number of quality backlinks to your site is greatly considered when ranking your site
What the Spiders Do Not Like:
1. Javascript Navigation – Javascript might be a great idea for the design of your website but unfortunately it is invisible to the spiders.
2. Doorway Pages – Doorway pages are standalone web pages visible only to the search engine spiders. Doorway pages are useless and irrelevant to human visitors
3. Frames – I am with the spiders on this one and will immediately leave any site that is built with frames. They are hard to navigate and hard to read for both humans and spiders.
4. Images – Images are very important on a website but unfortunately the spiders cannot read images or the text within the image.
5. Flash – Flash can make a website very dynamic and innovative but again the spiders cannot read or understand it so your site will not be indexed as it needs to be.

Facebook Includes Search History in User's Activity Logs

Facebook has recently added search history to its activity log

It was announced recently by Facebook that a personal search history will now be included in users’ Activity Logs.

To be rolled out to all users in the next few weeks, this new feature will enable users to view and delete all or some of their past searches. Currently, there is no way for users to share their search history with friends in the same way that Bing offers.

But now, Facebook users are given full access and control to what they share with their friends with their own Activity Log, with the option of being able to delete certain queries they make.

Basically, this search history feature is a drop-down recap of who or what you’ve been searching for when you type things into that search box at the top of your news feed. By clicking the button on your activity log, you will be able to see everything organized by date and query term, via both desktop and mobile sites. And, you will also be able to delete your search terms at any time, just like you can with the stuff you’ve shared through Timeline.

It seems that this new feature hints at Facebook’s plans entering the search realm, as what was promised by founder Mark Zuckerberg earlier this month.

Facebook’s moves into the world of web search have long been awaited by analysts and the search engine optimization expert community since Google had announced their own social platform. This is because both are in the position to collect massive amounts of social data as well as employ it in personalized web searches.

SEO QUIZ - 3

1.  A link from PR5 or 5 links from PR4 websites. Which is better for ranking? (You can select several answers)

   1. Depends on the theme of those websites
   2. One link from PR5 is better
   3. Five links from PR4 overcome one PR5 link
   4. They have approx. the same value
   5. In some situations one PR5 is better, in others – five PR4 provide more link juice

Explanation: PageRank value displayed on Google Toolbar is a discrete number from 0 to 10. However, the real PageRank value hidden deep inside Google’s algorithms is a fraction between 0 and 1. Some threshold values of this real PR correspond to numeric values of the toolbar PR.

This means that a PR4 site may have a value of its real PageRank just a tiny bit more than a threshold between PR3 and PR4 of the toolbar, or on the opposite, it may have a tiny bit lesser value than a threshold between PR4 and PR5.

This makes a huge difference, as in fact in the first case the site is PR3+ (a little better than PR3), while in the second case it is PR5- (a little worse than PR5). So depending on the situation, five PR4 links may be better than one PR5, or the opposite.

Also, the topic of a website is even more important factor, because a link from an irrelevant site will be devalued and won’t help you at all, regardless of its PageRank.

2.  Is it safe to use JavaScript navigation? (select one answer)

   1. Yes, Google is smart enough to read and follow JS links
   2. Nope, Google won’t read JS links
   3. It is safe as long as there are alternative non-JavaScript text links

Explanation: At this time, Google doesn’t read JavaScript links and doesn’t follow them, so you need to put some alternative text versions of your links if you want your site to be crawled in full. However, Google is smart indeed and it may start reading JavaScript very soon, at least partially.

3.  Would Google penalize you if you maked an H1 tag look like normal text by means of CSS? (select one answer)

   1. Yes
   2. No

Explanation: It is a bad practice to hide header tags like that, because headings should work as headings. If you want to emphasize some text, use <strong> or <em> tags instead. Though, Google doesn't seem to penalize you for that as long as you don't stuff a text with headings all over.
